Adjustment disorders are mental health conditions triggered by a specific, identifiable stressor. These disorders present with emotional and/or behavioral changes that cause significant distress for the individual. It is important to understand that the adjustment disorder symptoms must be disproportionate to what would typically be expected in response to the triggering event. These symptoms often begin to disrupt social, occupational, and daily functioning, negatively impacting relationships and self-care abilities.

Adjustment Disorders are Mental Health Conditions

  • Emotional and behavioral symptoms develop within 3 months following a clear stressor.
  • The severity and duration of adjustment disorder symptoms must exceed what is generally expected given the stressful event.

How Common are Adjustment Disorders?

Studies show that around 10-15% of patients receiving outpatient mental health services in the U.S. receive a diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder.

Are There Different Types of Adjustment Disorders?

Adjustment Disorders are classified based on the predominant adjustment disorder symptoms experienced by the individual:

  • Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood
  • Adjustment Disorder with Anxiety
  • Adjustment Disorder with Both Anxiety and Depressed Mood
  • Adjustment Disorder with Disturbance of Conduct
  • Adjustment Disorder, Unspecified

Mental health professionals may also specify if the disorder is Acute (symptoms last less than 6 months) or Chronic (symptoms persist beyond 6 months).

When Should I Seek Help for Adjustment Disorder Symptoms?

Consider scheduling a psychiatric evaluation if you notice:

  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of interest in favorite activities
  • Feelings of guilt or low energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in appetite or weight fluctuations
  • Increased irritability or anger
  • Struggles with routine tasks or “living life on hard mode”
  • Feelings of hopelessness or overwhelming stress
  • Frequent crying or trouble connecting with loved ones
  • Reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance use or self-harm
  • Suicidal thoughts

What Treatment Options Are Available for Adjustment Disorders?

Treatment plans for adjustment disorder symptoms are individualized and may include:

  • Psychotherapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), supportive therapy, mindfulness, EMDR, and other therapeutic approaches tailored to adjustment disorders.
  • Medication management, which is customized based on symptoms and psychiatric history.
  • Behavioral strategies focusing on improving sleep, exercise, nutrition, and social engagement.

Our clinicians can incorporate therapy into their sessions. If a patient requires more intensive or focused therapy, our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners will make recommendations for psychologists and therapists in your area, and will collaborate with them to provide coordinated care. We find that working with a team of specialized providers can result in the best outcomes, and we’re happy to take the time to do so.
